Reflections on Photography

내 시야를 사로잡은 무언가를 찍기 위해 사진기를 들고 셔터를 누르려는 바로 그 ‘순간’은, 오랜 시간 나에게 켜켜이 쌓여온 수없이 많은 감정의 파편들이 서로 조각을 맞춰내는 유기적인 <반응>의 순간이라고 생각한다. 그렇게 사진은 과거로부터 연속된 내 기억과 경험의 파편들을 끄집어내어, 현재의 내 감정과 연결하고 보태어 나를 다시 발견하는 일이 되는 셈이다.

사진 속 외조부모 밑에서 자랐던 저 꼬맹이 시절을 모두 완벽하게 기억하는 것은 아니지만, 그 시간 속에서 느꼈던 감정들은 내 의식과 무의식 속에 고스란히 존재하고 있다는 것을 의심하지 않는다. 내 안에 새겨져 있을 과거의 모든 감정들과, 지금 이 순간 셔터를 누르고 싶다고 반응하게 되는 감정은 서로 완전히 동떨어진 다른 객체가 아니라, 그 기저에 깊이 연결되어 유기적으로 긴밀하게 작용하는 것이고, 이는 지금의 ‘나’를 규정하는 것이라고 생각한다.

결국 지금의 내가 무언가에 반응하게 된다는 것은, 먼 과거의 나와 지금의 내가 연속적으로 연결되어 나타난 복합적인 결과물이라고 할 수 있지 않을까.

그렇게 오늘 찍은 사진 한 장은 현재의 나와 과거의 나를 연결하고 축적하는 증거가 된다.

The very moment I lift my camera and press the shutter to capture something that has seized my gaze feels, to me, like an organic moment of response—one in which countless fragments of emotion, layered within me over a long span of time, suddenly find their way into one another and align. In that sense, photography becomes an act of drawing out the fragments of my memories and experiences carried over from the past, connecting them to my emotions in the present, and through that process, discovering myself anew.

Although I can’t perfectly recall every detail of my childhood years growing up under my grandparents’ care, I have no doubt that the emotions I felt during that time still reside within my consciousness and subconsciousness. The emotions of my past and those that move me to press the shutter today are not separate or detached. They are deeply intertwined, organically and intimately influencing one another—and that very connection defines who I am in this moment.

In the end, when I respond to something today, it is the result of a continuous connection between my past self and my present self—a complex outcome of time woven together.

Thus, every photograph I take becomes evidence of that connection and accumulation between who I was and who I am.
