If one is fortunate, life offers moments when we encounter people who are able to focus intensely on their work and produce extraordinary results through relentless effort. When people like that are around you, it naturally makes you want to learn from them and aspire to become like them. It\u2019s why I\u2019ve come to believe that, especially for those just starting their careers, who your first mentor is can shape much of the first half of your professional life. That\u2019s also why I often tell younger colleagues: choose the work you want to do, but if you find yourself under a supervisor who has no positive influence on you, someone from whom there is nothing to learn\u2014someone who is simply careless or incompetent\u2014then don\u2019t hesitate. Leave immediately. People who are careless in their work are, more often than not, careless in character as well. And if you learn how to approach work and life under someone like that, the outcome is all too predictable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lately, I sometimes feel that same sense of dedication when I visit restaurants I frequent or happen upon by chance. There are people who give themselves fully to their craft, striving to go beyond what is merely expected in their field. Not because they are forced to, nor because they have no other choice, but because they carry a quiet sense of purpose\u2014one that allows them to devote themselves naturally, even joyfully, to what they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This feeling becomes especially pronounced when visiting omakase restaurants run by Japanese chefs. It\u2019s not just about the food. From the moment you step inside to the moment you leave, the care and attention paid to even the smallest details throughout the entire experience is deeply humbling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
